Sick Leave

Too many sick days, giving lazy people the opportunities to cheat and abuse the system.

What's the best of worst thing about sick days at Virginia Tech? Easy access to the Schiffert Health Center on campus. They are able to treat most things outside of needing emergency room treatment.

Staff get 8 days per year, faculty get 26 WEEKS, and for each 2 weeks they work, they earn back a week of sick leave! Administrative faculty in my department are out sick all the time, and they take a full day off if they have a doctor's appt. I always end up having to take my annual leave or leave without pay. If you have to be out more than a week (surgery), after a year, staff gets 60% of pay after taking the first 5 days as leave or unpaid leave. Faculty get 100% of salary for 6 months from day 1.

Best thing about sick days as a student hire is when/if i get sick I can call off with little worry of being in trouble. They wish to contain the spreading of whatever illness fall on a person thus encouraging those who are sick to stay home.
