Interview
I applied for the role in September and was contacted by a recruiter six days later. I was scheduled for a phone screening with the recruiter, and after that I was then passed on to the next stage of interview where I would connect with the hiring manager, which whom this role supported. The interview was the first video interview in the process. My conversation went extremely well, he mentioned multiple times how qualified I was and how the answers I was providing were exactly what he was looking for. At the end of the interview, he even confirmed that we would be speaking again. The next stage in the interview process would’ve been to connect with another member on the CX team.
My interview took place on a Friday and on that following Tuesday the recruiter reached out to me via email letting me know I would not be moving forward in the process. I was completely blindsided due to how well my conversation went and him reiterating that throughout the interview. The recruiter was great and offered to hop on a call with me to provide feedback. This is where things got interesting. Apparently the feedback the recruiter received was that, though I was qualified and highly skilled he didn’t like that in a previous role I held as an EA, the leader I supported would ask me to coordinate his personal and professional calendars at times with his wife.
Being in this career for over 10 years, I couldn’t believe that I was declined due to a requirement of a previous job, that had nothing to do with what my duties would be in this position.
I wholeheartedly feel that since this was the first video interview, he was looking for someone who physically did not look like me— a black person.
Of course, there’s no way for me to prove this assumption, but I do find it convenient that the person who was ultimately selected for this role is a blonde, white woman, with less experience than myself, no remote experience and a history of spending less than a year at each of their previous companies.
I’ve always been a fan of 1Password and have used it at numerous companies I’ve worked at. I am a little disappointed in what I believe is an active display of discrimination. The hiring manager is a new hire with less than a year at the company and I hope that they either have a conversation with them or are a bit more selective in the type of leadership they hire in the future.
