Applied online- did video interview for them. 5 questions, average stuff- 2 competency based questions and 3 technical example ones.
Invited to assessment centre- only gave a few days notice which i thought was quite bad.
First of, get put in reception where you sit about with the other graduates for 30mins- seemed a bit of a disorganised mess here. no one seemed to really know what was going on. wasn't hugely impressed.
Three parts to the day.
- Technical question
- presentation and technical interview
- Group exercise
Technical question was basically an individual task given. Based around a gas plant that was running in conjunction with another plant. had to figure out the ideal % for the plants to run at to meet demand. difficult but not impossible. consisted of 2 exercises over about 40mins.
Next was straight onto the presentation and technical interview. was told the presentation was to be on anything you wanted. Sat in a room, basically more of a chat about it rather than a full presentation- sat in a room with one interviewer. however, i could have said absolutely anything in this stage. the interviewer showed absolutely no interest in the project and kept looking around the room instead- very rude about the whole thing and didn't seem to listen to anything i said. not impressed. next was the technical interview- which are hard to prepare for anyway. However this was ridiculous. First question, the woman said you don't really need any background knowledge at all - just a basic engineering knowledge. Then proceeded to ask me to draw and graph a Thermodynamic Carnot Cycle. Something which is extremely specific to thermodynamics- i.e. if you don't know it you don't know it. there's not really any way to figure it out. Personally hadn't done thermodynamics in over a year so had no idea about this. seems ridiculous to test on such specific things that if you don't know there's no way of figuring out. other questions followed of similar nature- hard and generally very difficult.
Basically ranged from carnot cycle questions to fluid dynamics to civil engineering to pumps to fluid valves also
Lunch next- chat to recent grads etc etc
Next was the group exercise- split into a group of 3 or 4 for this. Given data about a new company that you want to pitch to. revolves around picking either a local based gas supply option or a delivery supply. Have to try figure out which is best option. Lots of data to go through with many many calculations and business things to analyse. v difficult. given 1 hour to do it and make a poster. then 15mins to present the idea 2/3 assessors. then get absolutely abused for another 20minutes of questions by the assessors. very condescending process- wasn't a thing where they are like oh well done guys. always trying to put you down and make you feel like your wrong and they are better than you.
basically the whole day was a one way process- it wasn't a 2 way thing where you get to chat to them about the company or they ask you why you want to work for them etc. all they seemed to care about was how good technically you are. seemed they aren't interested in the people themselves- more want a monkey that can do all the technical stuff they need done.
Really not impressed and would not recommend the company at all. very condescending and rude throughout the day.
Did not get offered the position but would have 110% rejected it if i had. company really need to have a look at the way the process is done as its meant to persuade the graduates that working there is good as well. not just trying to see who the smartest is.
