      Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 24, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Bernardino, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at AppFolio (San Bernardino, CA) in Jun 2025

      Interview

The interview process was very smooth and professional. I truly appreciate that this is the first company I’ve seen that provides constructive feedback even after a rejection — that speaks volumes about the culture and candidate experience. One observation I'd like to share: The interview expected the candidate to write fully running code and explicitly instructed to run it. While I understand and respect the intent behind this — ensuring practical implementation — I personally believe interviews should place more emphasis on logical problem-solving, appropriate data structure usage, and writing clean, maintainable code. Minor syntax errors or missing print statements shouldn’t overshadow the candidate’s approach or understanding. I’m an interviewer at a big tech, I focus more on the problem-solving journey and overall design rather than complete syntax precision under time pressure. I believe this allows a better assessment of a candidate’s core strengths. Thank you again for the transparent and respectful process.

      Interview

Screening call with the recruiter, then moved to a 75-minute technical interview with another software engineer and a manager. That involved System design and coding problems. After that, you moved to a final behavioural interview.

      Question 1

Behavioural question involved a complex problem you solved. Rapid-fire system design questions ranging from scalability to performance. The coding interview involves removing duplicates from a string of messages.

      Interview

Met with a recruiter first to speak about prior work experience and learn a bit about the company and current objective. Professional, respectful, and collaborative interviews. Consisted of 4 rounds all done remote, OOP coding questions. Friendly conversation as well.
