I'm interviewing for a senior level position and they gave me an architectural question. I had a pretty simple and well thought out design for the given question because I had just performed this task in my current job only a couple weeks prior. The interviewer was not familiar with any of the cloud technologies I mentioned (lambdas, pub/sub topics, cloud scheduler) which made it difficult for her to understand my solution. I think she was so lost with the technologies I was using she asked me to design the system without using those technologies. I'm thinking, WTF, if this is the workplace, I'm going to use the cloud technologies that best accomplish a task. I also know Atlassian uses AWS. I asked her about her experience after finishing the question and turns out she's an entry level (just over a year of experience) engineer. It made no sense why an entry level engineer would be running a senior level architecture question. My advice to Atlassian would be to have qualified interviewers run the interviews, and if you're going to have young engineers run an interview, make sure there is a second qualified engineer on the interview.
