Auth0 Software Engineer interview questions

The interview process was pretty fine until the final round, which is a technical exercise. The exercise itself was very large--they said it should take 12-15hrs, and I found that to be about right. You're plopped into a slack channel with your potential future team members, which is rather awkward, because it's a channel just about you, and they don't really have much to say. I asked for clarification on certain parts of the project and sent out a 3-page design doc which got very little feedback on the channel, but I proceeded to do the project anyways. Then, the day after I was supposed to have completed the project, the recruiter emailed me that the team thought I didn't communicate enough in the slack channel and that they were no longer interested - this is despite the fact that they list independence and research ability as something they are looking for and the fact that I spent 15 hours grinding out their vague difficult project. I was extremely frustrated that a) I got rejected without my code being looked at after many good interviews prior, and b) that the reason for rejection was that I didn't talk enough on a made-up slack channel, and c) that I got such lackluster response to the stuff I did post to the channel. All-in-all, the technical exercise and rejection made me almost glad that I wasn't going to work there because I did not feel like my time was valued and I did not feel like I would have fit into the team given the culture and values that they displayed.

I passed the screening; that went really well. The next interview was arranged very quickly after, and was with the Director of Engineering. This was contrary to their documented process, so I wasn't sure what to make of it. I found the Director to be rude and dismissive. His accent took a few minutes to get used to, and his internet connection kept dropping out during the call. He asked me to describe Auth0 to a non-technical person, then interrupted me and re-stated what I had said in a very condescending tone with only one word changed. Things improved from there. When it came time for me to ask questions, I began by asking what it was about my resume and/or screening that had lead to the current interview, and he replied that he didn't know; that he was asked to step in at this phase because there was currently no manager over the team to which I had applied. I understand the situation, but my interest in working at Auth0 under this Director vanished at this point. Rude, unprofessional, and I think very telling about the level of maturity in the Engineering organization here.
