Overall, the interview process isn't hard if you put effort into it. Don't give shallow answers and expect good results. Axios is looking for people who know their stuff.
My interview process was as follows:
1) Phone screen - This is usually with someone from HR. Takes about 15-30 minutes. Pretty easy - all you need to do is articulate your experience well, ask good questions, hold a good conversation.
2) Hiring Manager Meeting - Mine was about 30-45 minutes, I believe. This is usually with your potential manager or another teammate, so the questions will be more specific to the job. I'd advise you take a look at the job description, imagine your day to day in that role, and write down anything you have any questions about. This helped me formulate questions that showed that I thought about the role in detail and the impact I would like to have.
3) Team Interviews - This is a ~2-3 hour block comprised of ~30-45 interviews with individual team members - all of whom you'd working closely with, if hired, The key here is the same as the Hiring Manager interview - be prepared and come with thoughtful questions. You get the names of your interviewers ahead of time, so be sure to do your LinkedIn research and come up with good questions about what they do and how your role might interact with theirs. Also, be nice and personable - they are looking at you as a possible co-worker.
4) Final Hiring Manager Interview - 30 minute interview with the same person from the previous hiring manager interview. Come ready to share what you learned from the Team Interviews. In my case, she wanted to know particular features or initiatives I would prioritize as an Axios PM and why.
Other tips:
- Take copious notes from all the interviews, as they are connected.
- Prepare good questions. Your notes will be a good resource for generating follow up questions in subsequent interviews
- Be patient. Knowing where you stand in the process can take a while. Rest assured, HR didn't forget about you - it's a startup and things get hectic for them. Assume you'll hear back ~1-2 weeks between each step.
