      Software Engineer Interview

      Apr 15, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Axon in Apr 2024

      Interview

Interviewing with Axon was an incredibly negative experience. The interview process was way too lengthy and had no consideration for the value of my time. The interview process consisted of: - HR screen, 30 min - Interview with hiring manager, 1 hour - Coding test, 1 hour - Homework assignment, 6 hours - Technical screen, 1 hour - Homework assignment review, 1 hour - Behavioral screen, 1 hour - 2nd coding test, 1 hour - System design test, 1 hour Also each interview included a quiz on one of the "Axon Core Values", so there were several additional hours coming up with examples from my work history for each of their listed values. These interviews were not pleasant either, many of the interviewers were rude and pushy and I got the feeling that they were scripted along the lines of "Let's push the candidates buttons and see how they react under pressure." When I applied to Axon, I copied the details of several of their job postings I was interested in into a spreadsheet. Halfway through the interview process, I went to double-check the pay band of the job I was interviewing for, and none of the numbers from the Axon careers page lined up with the pay-band numbers I had originally written down. Someone from Axon had gone in and adjusted the salary requirements. I guess they thought the market conditions had changed, but for them to downgrade salary requirements halfway through the interview process was another huge red flag. After the last interview, I got an email saying I wasn't a fit. When I asked if I could get feedback for my own job search going forward, I was told that was "not their corporate policy". I thought it was really rude that after I'd invested several days to Axon and talked with several of their team members, they couldn't even share why exactly I didn't get the job.

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

A graph traversal style question. I don't remember the exact question but the answer was "Dykstra's Algorithm".
      Answer question

      Question 2

The homework assignment was a basic WPF app with a list of several changes they would like. Unfortunately to complete many of these changes, the app required a complete overhaul taking several hours.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Given a string, check if it is a palindrome. This is a "gotcha" style question, because on the surface this is a very simple coding problem to solve. However, there were many "hidden" conditions (whitespace, punctuation, etc.) that the interviewer expected me to figure out before starting. The interviewer specifically said I "should've asked more questions." I felt this 2nd coding interview was antagonistic and unnecessary, especially since I'd already aced the first coding test and gone over the homework assignment with the hiring manager.

      Interview

1hr - screen with Hiring Manager. C# .NET Questions. 4x 1hr technical interview. Leetcode style rounds Some behavioral questions sprinkled in the rounds. Interview lasted around a couple weeks. Most of the engineers were pretty chill. The Hiring manager seemed more effective and less emotive.

      Interview

Round 1 — AI Behavioral Screening An automated AI bot round asking questions about your background and experience. No coding involved — purely behavioral. Treat it seriously as it's a real filter before moving forward. Round 2 — LeetCode Style Coding Round A standard technical coding round with algorithm and data structure problems. Be comfortable with your DSA fundamentals. Round 3 — Online Coding Assessment A timed coding assessment administered through an online platform. Similar to Round 2 but in a structured, proctored format. Practice working under time pressure. Round 4 — Behavioral Round with Engineering Director (Virtual) This is Axon's ACE behavioral round, conducted by a director-level engineering leader. Follows Axon's ACE values framework — expect deep STAR-style questions around ownership, cross-team collaboration, technical decision-making, and initiative. They will drill multiple levels deep on anything on your resume, so know your projects cold including the business context behind every decision. Don't treat this like a standard behavioral interview. Round 5 — Onsite (Seattle, In-Person) Final round in Seattle with senior engineering leadership. Behavioral in nature, focused on role fit, career trajectory, communication, values alignment, and AI readiness. More conversational than Round 4 but still rigorous. Come with a clear narrative on your career arc and genuine, specific reasons for wanting to join Axon.

      Easy interview

      Interview

Hands down worst experience I ever had interviewing. The whole process is 3 rounds but you have to do all 3 in a row before they give you results. The interviewers for 2 of the rounds didn't show up at all and I had to reschedule. When one show up for the second time, he was very unapologetic and extremely unprofessional and rude. He's a director there so that tells you all about the company. Recruiter very hard to reach as well. All coding interviews very easy and even the good-to-haves were easy but still didn't get the offer. Communicated throughout as well. So not even sure what their criteria is.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We take feedback like this seriously, and we’re sorry to hear that your interview process did not meet the standard we aim to provide. What you described - missed interviews, difficulty reaching the recruiting team, and an unprofessional interaction - is not representative of how we expect our teams to operate. We are actively reviewing this feedback internally to address gaps in scheduling, communication, and interviewer conduct. Regarding interview outcomes, we evaluate candidates across multiple dimensions beyond technical performance, including collaboration, problem-solving approach, and alignment with role requirements. That said, we recognize that a lack of clarity can be frustrating, and we are working to improve how we communicate expectations and decisions throughout the process. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and wish you the best in your continued search.
