      Engineer Interview

      Jul 12, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Jul 2016

      Interview

One 30 min phone interview with the Hiring Manager with a 4-hour follow-up onsite interview. Square used to be a commanding brand and a great opportunity for anyone in the tech industry. When I met a few folks on the team, however, it wasn't very apparent that they were excited about the problems that they were trying to solve. Aside from a couple modules on programming and architecture, time with the Square team felt rushed, and it didn't seem like they were genuinely excited to hire new blood. Instead, the interviews were conducted in a very clinical way, and there weren't any interesting questions coming from the Square team. On top of that, the whole day interview at HQ was without a lunch or a break session, whatsoever. Typically this wouldn't be an important red flag, but to top it off, the Recruiting team closed the conversation with "People who join the Square team believe strongly in the mission and will take a pay cut for that mission."

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      a. Be prepared to code onsite any problems that appear on Cracking the Coding Inteview (McDowell, 5th edition). b. Be prepared to whiteboard architecture for any generic service.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. We were really disappointed to read about your interview process — definitely not cool, and we're really sorry. We'll discuss your feedback with the team immediately. We will work to make sure that future interviewers do not appear rushed or uninterested- and we’re really sorry that this came off as the case. Our interviewers attend training, develop questions and follow an objective and structured interview process. We apologize you were not offered a lunch or break session; this is our goal and almost always included in the itinerary. Again, we're very sorry about the experience. At Square, we are always striving to provide the best candidate experience possible and your post will help us improve the process. Thank you for sharing. Best, The Square Talent Team

      Interview

I went to 3 interviews and none of them were my hiring manager…….. I wasted 3 hours directly and perhaps 5 hours indirectly preparing for this. I was given a test from an engineer from a totally different team that never did the work I was applying for….. I believe I apply for a job and was interview by other teams….

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Behavior and technical. The recruiter might not know exactly what the team is looking for or the actual hiring manager is brainstorming the new role but I never met this person.

      Interview

I am a pretty experienced professional of color and am used to tech companies wanting to hire me to check a diversity box. The conversation I had with Square took this to a new level. Both the recruiter and hiring manager went into their commitment to diversity on their teams before I had even asked about it and before we had even discussed the job I was interviewing for. So because I'm "diversity" that's all I get to learn about? What about the business itself? What about my qualifications? It was especially strange because when I researched the team I found zero people of color which shows that this is purely lip service...

Thank you for interviewing with Square and sharing your concern. We appreciate your feedback as your experience does not align with our intent or our policies. We do not have any hiring quotas based on protected traits. While we strive to expand our pipeline with diverse candidates, we evaluate all candidates based on their job related skills, experience, and talent. As such, our recruiters and hiring managers seek candidates of all backgrounds while sharing information about our business, our products, and our company. At Square, inclusion and diversity is incredibly important to us, and our approach to increasing diversity is to bring more underrepresented candidates into the interview pipeline for consideration. Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Block

      Interview

I was contacted by a Recruiter on LinkedIn. The message they sent was very unprofessional with many errors but since I was recently laid off and looking for work I agreed to connect with them. Our call was standard but they did share some concerning information. I asked about diversity at Square and they told me that they must interview one diverse candidate for each job before extending offers. Isn't this reverse discrimination? So if I am qualified for a job I won't get hired so they can fill a quota? Seems like reverse discrimination. They also could not answer any of my questions around company culture and how they are adapting in this new environment.
