      Engineer Interview

      Apr 8, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Blue Origin (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2022

      Interview

In short, I went through the full interview process (first interview, essay, technical talk, one-on-one interviews) and was completely ghosted. While the technical team seemed great, HR/ recruiting seem to have some serious problems. I don’t take rejections personally; it is disappointing to conduct a time-intensive interview, as well as the required preparation, only for the recruiters to not even dignify you with a form rejection letter. Below are some more details. Read on if you like. I hope you find this helpful. - During early contact, recruiters thought that their colleagues had contacted me, yet they had not. There appear to be internal communication issues. - For the first interview, the recruiter told me that he would call me. Instead, I was surprised to find myself on a technical call with engineers. Still, I was prepared and this went well. - For the next stage, the recruiter sent me the form letter for an interview request that was intended for another recipient (oops!). (The “fill in the blank” sections for things like “candidate,” “position,” etc. were still in colored text.) We all make mistakes like forgetting to attach a file to an email, but sending the personal information of one candidate to another is irresponsible and careless. - Blue makes you write an essay on your passion for human spaceflight. I can’t provide any useful advice here, since I received no feedback. Maybe a review by a current employee can be more helpful. - I gave an hour-long technical talk, which is standard. This is the only company, however, that has ever required me to leave a copy of my slides behind and pushed back strongly when I expressed reluctance to do so. - I then had one-on-one interviews with the technical team. The technical team was great! (Interview questions listed in appropriate section of review.) - There were several last-minute substitutes due to interviewers being on vacation. Again, there may be internal communication issues or carelessness on the part of the recruiters scheduling the interviews. - I followed up with thank-yous to my interviewers via the recruiters, since I did not have my interviewers’ contact information. Given the glaring communication issues I witnessed earlier in the process, I now doubt that these were ever delivered. - Following the interview, I was ghosted (timeline below). In spite of repeated requests for updates, I received no reply. After 4 weeks of ghosting, I figured it was a rejection, which is fine. However, this strongly contrasts typical industry practice, which is to communicate with and notify applicants who have proceeded to the final interview stage. Timeline: Application: Day 0 Technical phone screen: 2 weeks Full interview: ~8 weeks Promised reply: 10 weeks (interview + 2) Follow-up 1: 10 weeks and change (interview + 2 and change). Said they're hoping to know by the end of the next week. Follow up-2: 12 weeks (interview + 4) - no reply Follow-up 3: 16 weeks (interview + 8) - no reply

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

For the most part, I was asked fair technical questions that were relevant to the job description. Be prepared for these. Be prepared for typical STAR-type behavioral interview questions. There are all kinds of references online for this type of thing. Name a time when you took a risk. Name a time when you made a mistake. Name a time you had to deal with a difficult colleague. Name a time when you had to deal with a policy you didn’t agree with. What do you see as your impact from day 1? The engineers here were humble and focused on getting to know me.

      Interview

Initial 30min Recruiter Screening that asked mostly motivation for working at Blue Origin and what technical skills you bring that match the Job Description. During the same meeting, I was told I'd be going forward to the panel interview. My panel was 5 1-on-1 45 min sessions. Very big mixture of behavioral and technical questions depending on who you're interviewing with.

      Interview

Took a few weeks and involved calls with the recruiter, a call with the hiring manager, a 4 hour panel interview and an essay. No real feedback on the interview despite feeling like things went well. The recruiter could’ve been more responsive.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Some very vague technical questions phrased by someone who isn’t technical and a lot of behavioral questions.
