Experienced Hire - Associate Position Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Boston Consulting Group in May 2016

      Interview

When I first got to the office, I went to the common area to wait for my interviewer to take me. While waiting, I had a pleasant conversation with different interviewees and recruiters. They were all very friendly and I didn't feel the pressure to compete against them. Round 1 had two interviews. I had one with a partner and the other with a project lead. Both interviews were consisted of 15 mins of fit questions and 25 mins of case questions. The fit portion was pretty standard. They asked me: 1) Why BCG and why consulting 2) Tell me your leadership experience, and your leadership style 3) Tell me one time you showed tenacity in a work place 4) Tell me one time you showed flexibility As for case, both cases were about optimizing cost structures and both involved a lot of number calculations. I felt that I made my framework more complicated than needed because I had practiced a lot and wanted to make sure I cover everything. Turned out the actual case questions were much simpler than I anticipated. After the interview, I felt that I did very well on the fit portion, but I could have done better on case. But based on their feedback, they told me the opposite (oops). I passed my first round and is now preparing for my final. The interviewers and recruiter all gave me feedback right away, and their feedback was: For fit: 1) Answer fit questions directly 2) Do not force a story into a question (they want candid answers) For Case: 3) Pick only the most important areas (usually limit to 3 since you only have 20 mins to solve a case) 4) Don't give a canned framework (no textbook like framework) One takeaway I had is that, do not over prepare and always tailor your framework to the question you were given. Well, I hope you will find my review helpful! Good luck!
