      Freight Conductor Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 months. I interviewed at CSX in Jul 2011

      Interview

You apply online and it takes months for them to get back to you. I thought for sure I was not getting the job because so much time had passed. You start by filling out an application online. The days of just showing and talking to a manager to get a job are over. After you fill out all your information you take some reading comprehension tests. The first one is based on mechanical knowledge so any mechanical experience will help here. The second one is timed to five minutes and you will not be able to finish it which is frusterating. You will retake this test at the hiring session and the purpose of it is to make sure the same person who took the test online is the same person at the hiring session. The last test is about 150 questions of "It's ok to take home supplies from work without permission" and other questions like that and you should answer strongly agree or strongly disagree on every question in order to pass the test. You will be notified via email if you are invited to the hiring session so check your email. The will pick a conference room at a hotel near the location you applied for for the hiring session. There will be at least 2 people there from CSX. One will be the speaker telling you about the company and the others are there to observe all the canadites. They want to see if you can follow simple instructions like push in your chair. The whole session is a test from the moment you walk in the conference room. They will spend about three hours telling you all the cons about working for a big railroad to try and get people disinterested in the position but it is only half as bad as they say it is if you ask me. In my group they brought in 30 people and they convinced 22 of them the railroad wasn't for them. After that it will be lunch time and they will schedule interviews later on that day. The will ask mostly safety related questions durring the interview and it will take close to an hour. They will call you to let you know if you have been selected within a week. You will then have to take your drug test so if you do anything you don't bother applying here. The will do a hair folicle test and there is no way to foil that kind of test. They can pull hair from anywhere on your body and if you shave your head and wax your body that is considered a failure. There is no way to foil a hair folicle test. I know two guys I work with that tried the shampoo and they tested positive durring a random drug test at work. If you pass you will have to go for a medical exam. It will be strenuous and exhausting. They are not to picky with previous injuries as long as you can do the exercises. I have a bad knee and I passed the test. After that you will be notified on your start date at the REDI center in Atlanta. You will have to spend 6 weeks down there and pass with at least an 85 GPA. They will put you in a hotel and either pay you auto mileage to drive down there or pay for plane tickets. They will not pay for you to go home anytime durring the training. You will be on probation once you get down there so don't do anything stupid. After that you will go home and spend time at your assingned location for on the job training. Once you finish that you get marked up and are on probation for 90 more days after you are done with training. It is easy for them to fire you while you are on probation so don't get caught breaking any rules.

It’s all online. You record yourself answering couple questions and that’s it. Minimal human interaction. I believe it was only 5 questions or so and you have a time limit to answer
