      Visual Designer Interview

      Sep 11, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Canonical in Jun 2024

      Interview

It was a multiple steps interview and it started with 13 questions about myself (who I was in high school, what my grades were, who would my coleagues describe me and why, why did I choose canonical. I spent a couple hours answering the questions and then after review, they decided to move forward with me to the next step which was the 'Psychometric test'. In the email with the link to the test they outline that the test can't be failed and it's just a way of understanding how I think etc. After taking the test they decided not to move forward with my application for unknown reasons and didn't offer any feedback.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Canonical (London, England) in Jun 2022

      Interview

The interviewers and the staff I talked to were very friendly and it was a generally pleasant experience and atmosphere in the interviews. If it wasn't for two things, I'd have rated this whole process as pleasant and positive. However, these two steps are the sheer number of steps and interviews to complete and really long silence periods in-between where I was not sure whether we continue with the interviews at all. It was an extremely long-winded and convoluted process that made zero sense, especially since I was not applying for a senior position. Step 1: They wanted CV, cover letter, portfolio etc... (perfectly normal) Step 2: Written interview that covers everything from high school and university achievements to present day and took about 21 pages of text to complete (a bit too long but still OK) Steps 3 & 4: Psychological adaptability test and general intelligence test Step 5: Interview with an UX designer Step 6: Interview with chief designer Step 7: Interview with a web designer Step 8: Two technical skill test assignments with limit of 8 hours to complete. This all took about 62 days. Then after step 8 there was a total radio silence and no feedback for 32 days until I sent an email to inquire if the process will continue. I was assured I'm still being considered, followed up by another interview with HR (step 9) where I had a talk about expected salary and benefits. In the interview I was assured everything went so fine, and now we were going to start with a series of technical assessments (from which I assumed it meant two or three more interviews) By this point we were already 96 days into the interview process. This was again followed by another 12 days of complete silence. On day 109 I sent another email to enquire when these technical assessments will start (so I can plan ahead), and on the same day I got the answer that they want and that they they won't consider my application further. This was weird because in the last interview they said everything was great so far and we're starting with the technical assessment interviews. I was unable to figure out exactly how many more steps and interviews it would have taken to get to the end but so far 9 steps were just the initial stage and they took 109 days. The sudden change of opinion in the end and decision not to continue with the process was unexpected.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I had 20+ years of work experience by the time I started these interviews, yet a number of initial questions were about high school and university achievements and to describe how I solved some problems in unique way, or how I overcame problems by thinking out of the box.
