Senior Associate Private Client Advisor Interview

      Jul 4, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Charles Schwab in May 2021

      Interview

Let me preface this negativity by first saying I have a good amount of experience working for three major brokerage firms and have interviewed with several others, so I'm familiar with the industry and my expectations are shaped by my prior interview experiences. First interview was with a recruiter/screener and was pretty standard. They seemed kind enough and most of the questions were pretty straight-forward. Second interview was with a panel of four people: three managers of various seniority and one Private Client Advisor. I was not told ahead of time that this would be a panel-style interview, but whatever, at least it made me feel special. Two of the managers were several minutes late to the Zoom meeting. Three of the four had as much personality as a pile of rocks. This was not a conversation...it was 60 straight minutes of each of them taking turns firing off questions from their script. Nearly every question was "tell me about a time when..." style. There were no responses or acknowledgement to my answers; They'd simply move on to the next question. I made several attempts to be personable and make light jokes to break the ice, but I could count on one hand the amount of times I saw a smile from any of the four people over the hour-long interview. They're not required to be my friends, but with four senior-level folks in front of me, I'm confident this is enough of a sample size to tell me something about the company culture. At the end, when they asked me what questions I had, I asked each of them what drew them to Schwab and what they like about the company. Only one of them provided any personal anecdotes or experiences that spoke to them. The other three each recited some generic, fruit loop answer that "Schwab is a company that truly works in the best interest of their clients." Well, I certainly hope so...they're a brokerage firm! Every company of every industry would say they work in the best interest of their clients. I left the interview hoping I wouldn't get an offer so my decision would be easier. They were kind enough to email me their decision to pursue other candidates...not even the courtesy of a phone call. Perhaps this was simply the region of the country in which I was interviewing, but it was not an impressive experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

"Why Schwab?" "How do you manage your time?" "What do you do to prioritize your tasks?" "Tell me about a time when you dealt with an upset client." "What is your service model?"- (What kind of question is this?) I asked the interviewer if he could please clarify what he meant, to which he responded by repeating it verbatim, but more slowly...I eventually answered by explaining what I consider to be the standard process of taking care of wealth management clients: prompt responses to concerns/service requests, annual reviews, proactive outreach especially during times of market volatility, etc. I don't think this is what they were looking for, but perhaps you can come up with a better answer than I could if you get this one.
