      Research Associate Interview

      Washington, DC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at CoStar Group (Washington, DC) in Jul 2012

      Interview

I sent out my resume to the CoStar Group over my university's job board. About a week later, I was contacted by one of their corporate recruiters, asking if I had dropped off my resume during one of their job fairs. That was my first red flag- not knowing where my resume came from. I scheduled a phone interview with the same corporate recruiter, who called me 20 minutes later than she told me she would originally call, asking me if she could call me in another 20 minutes. I obliged, but that was my second red flag. My phone interview went smoothly, and I thought I had connected well with my interviewer, and we scheduled an in person interview the following week. When I arrived for my interview that morning, I was specifically told that they were looking for numerous people to be part of their next class by the corporate recruiter. The first person who interviewed me was a woman who was hired from the outside as a research manager (the one who supervises the research associate position, which gave me another red flag, especially reading all the other reviews here), and she seemed somewhat disconnected with the people she worked with. She also interrupted me multiple times during my interview period. She later told me that she had been working there for less than a year. She asked me very typical interview questions- i.e. "what was a challenge you had to overcome?" and "why are you interested in this position?" The second interviewer was a current research associate- she told me she had been working in the company for years, and I was surprised that her dedication to the company went unnoticed. We went through a day in the life research associate routine, including typing in new information into the system, calling people, and then I myself gave it a shot. My last interviewer was a regional manager, I'm assuming the one who works above the research managers. She was kind and warm, and was perhaps the best part of my experience. Similar to the research manager, she asked me very typical interview questions, including "When you do something monotonous, what keeps you alert?," "What kind of magazines do you read?" (Was this a trick question?) and "What sort of market trends do you follow?" When I was done with that interview, I met back with the corporate recruiter, who gave me a quick tour of the place. Flashy? Yes. I wonder if the employees really get to use the gym, the rooftop, etc. that I saw.

      Interview

Extremely lengthy. 4 stages over about 2 months. Panel interview that took 6 hours. One panelist did not show and added another interview stage. Due to length, I found a better offer and declined after finally getting to an offer.

      Question 1

I was asked about recruitment processes. Follow the status quo or define a new SOP?
