      Strategy and Operations Associate Interview

      Dec 13, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 2 months. I interviewed at DoorDash (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

Easy interviews, I'm surprised I didn't get through the final round. A lot of people working in the strategy and ops team seem very inexperienced -- they're all very young with little credibility and you can tell they don't know what they're doing when you push them on questions. Process goes like this: 1) Apply 2) Hear back from hiring manager 2 weeks later for 15 minute call 3) Analytical Exercise 4) 1 behavioral interview and 1 case interview with manager (30 minutes each) 5) 1 case interview with manager and 1 presentation of analytical exercise 6) Final Interview with director the analytics interview is easy, you can find it online. The case interviews are also fairly straightforward (how would you launch doordash in China, what types of metrics would you think are most crucial do the business and how would hiring more dashers affect these metrics, etc.) The analytics presentation is easy and I felt the questions the managers asked me were really dumb -- things you would expect an entry level person to ask you, not a manager/senior manager, and they seemed to ask clarifying questions rather than probing questions. I felt like they were trying to use my case to gather new ideas of what they can do to their own business... Additionally, a lot of the people I interviewed with seemed pretty rude and disinterested (only 2 of the 6 people I met with actually had a friendly demeanor... the rest seemed like they just wanted to get over with the interview before it even started). Overall, I made it to the last round and received an email saying I wasn't a good fit with no feedback which was surprising because I actually felt i was underqualified for the position and wanted to ask them to consider me for a manager role... LOL the pay is also not that great... senior associates get paid 100-120k base pay and 70k equity over 4 years if they are in bay area... overall, id say unless your desperate don't waste your time interviewing here. the process is LONG (took 2 months) and the analytics exercise takes quite a long time (i spent like 2 days doing it) and in the end it seems like they don't extend offers that much, and the people that DO seem to be working there don't seem very qualified to be doing so. And the way they operate seems SUPER inefficient -- each person is responsible for a specific metric, and when I asked how people make decisions that may negatively affect some metrics and benefit other metrics given different people own different metrics, they couldn't give me a great answer...

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at DoorDash

      Interview

Had a phone screener with a recruiter who very clearly did not want to be there and just asked typical generic questions about my background, communication styles, etc. Was given a take home case study and short SQL exercise and given 48 hours to return it (which I spent most of my weekend on) only to receive an auto reject email two days later. I did not get to speak to the hiring manager or anyone on the team I applied for.

      I interviewed at DoorDash

      Interview

Fairly simple recruiting process. Intro chat with recruiter, case study round, debrief of case study, then final round in office with team. Was given an Excel sheet full of transaction data and asked to put together a client-ready deck of slides with insights (graphs encouraged) and recommendations based on what was found.

      Interview

I went through two rounds, with HR and my would-be manager. Both were fairly straightforward. I did think the manager interview went well, but no dice. I believe they look for a certain style in approach that needs some research.
