Prior to meeting with the GM I filled out an online application and took a personality test.
I met with the GM at the midtown location. As I sat waiting for him I was surprised to learn that the two young women dressed in cocktail halter dresses, spiky shoes, with their hair so flat ironed that they appeared to have just rolled off the press, were management from headquarters. Their presence and attitudes were unprofessional. Had I met them at a party I might have felt differently. But they were unfriendly and quite self absorbed.
The GM was what you might expect from midtown--the affectation of a man that measures every word for effect. The interview questions were very general. I filled out an application and gave him my resume.
The next step was to attend an open house being held by--I believe it was human resources. I received a confirmation email with the time and arrived 10 minutes early. Had it been the RIGHT time I would have been 10 minutes early, however, the email information that I received was incorrect. The door was locked and when they opened it, under her breath, the equinox representative said: YOU"RE LATE. All eyes on me. There were probably 16-20 potential hires there. How awkward. They apparently showed a video on the company during the meeting, which I missed. I think I was there for 2 minutes before I had to sell myself. It was terribly uncomfortable.
At the end of the meeting I introduced myself to the staff from headquarters. I apologized for the being late and explained that the person(who was standing right there) emailed me the wrong time for the meeting. They completely blew that off what I said and implied that people are late all the time...
Because "I'm not," when I got back to my computer I sent the woman who originally notified me of the time--who was there at the meeting-- a copy of the email and explained that I didn't feel like I had the opportunity to put my best foot forward under the circumstances. She responded with--it was very nice meeting you and good luck with the interview process. Never owned it! How weird. By this point I was feeling like I had no interest in working for this company. They were horrible! I decided to contact the GM that I had met with and tell him what occurred. He responded in exactly the same way as the person who sent the original email.
What a disturbing culture this company has created. It's like the stepford employees! Even down to their EST like expression that they repeat over and over: Thank you for reaching out! I just want to reach out to you!
The irony is that I'm acquainted with the person who got hired for the job. She has a marketing background.
2 months later she told me that I was so fortunate NOT to have been hired and that she's leaving. She said it was truly the WORST company she has ever worked for. No support, ridiculous quota, and more.
Equinox will not be able to ride on their "oh, we have Kiehl's products in our showers!" forever. What they don't have is what will ultimately matter. And that would be intelligence and interpersonal skills.
