Explain the box model in terms of CSS.

The box model is the term used to describe how an html element's with, content area, and space on the page is calculated and rendered. It consists of padding, margins, borders, and content. In modern browsers (sorry =< IE8) the width and height is calculated with the aforementioned properties with exception of the margins.
