      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at FedEx Dataworks (Tysons Corner, VA) in May 2025

      Interview

I started off with a 15-minute Phone Interview. The job role was for a data analyst, but after talking with the interviewer, he made it clear that this role was for a data engineer not a data analyst. He told me that the data analyst role was actually a data engineering role with 5% using power bi. He had not looked at my resume before and said to look for data science roles and data analyst roles are actually as data engineer roles at fedex. The job posting got taken down quick so I was not able to reference it. When looking at other Data analyst positions on Fedex Dataworks, those roles all make it clear that it is a data analyst role. This is what a role says "Responsible for conducting data analysis to extract actionable insights, exploring datasets to uncover patterns and anomalies, analyzing historical data for trend identification and forecasting, investigating data discrepancies, providing user training and support on data analysis tools, communicating findings through compelling visualizations, supporting data projects, and ensuring data accuracy and integrity." When talking with the Data engineer lead he said I would be building data warehouse pipelines and ETL/ELT development and data modeling. I ended the interview early.

      Interview

I applied in April and heard back one month later to confirm some information. After another two weeks, I was invited to a phone interview in June . It's a 15 minutes phone interview with a data engineering manager, the first question was about work authorization, I was informed this role isn't considering OPT candidates even though I clarified that I don't need sponsorship in the futureThe interview ended shortly after. I respect the team’s decision, but I do wish this work eligibility requirement had been clearly stated in the job description to avoid unnecessary steps on both sides.
