Got reached out by HR a month after submitting my resume. Had a straightforward conversation over the phone. She was happy with the relevant experience.
Moved to the next round of interviews with the hiring manager. Lots of talking on her end. At one point she has used the phrase “oh, I guess this is an Asian talking in me” which had me a bit confused. Did not expect to have stereotypical thinking at a high level management to have been displayed during the interview process. She has identified the gaps that my experience would fill in. Very encouraging during the interview, very happy with the experience and with my answers. Ended the interview and never heard back from them.
The whole process was very deceptive - both the interviewers very very excited by my experience and by the way I’ve handled the interviews. Both were extremely encouraging and made me feel that the interviews have been successful.
I guess they weren’t looking for an experience, but more so for the right person. Needless to say with doing a bit of research you can find out that from the director of the department, the hiring manager to the members of the team are all the same ethnicity. Which made me think eventually due the phrase that has slipped from her that this is the kind of mentality that is fostered within the team.
Never got an offer, but I wouldn’t want to work with the manager that thinks it’s ok to have stereotypical thinking and that lacks the basic understanding of cultural diversity.
