Handshake Software Engineer interview questions

Terrible experience. Process took 3 weeks. I had an initial phone screening where they asked me typical experience questions. I asked about the salary range, and was told a range I was comfortable with, so I decided to pursue them Then I went through all the interview sessions including: a basic coding challenge, a paired programming exercise in ruby/rails, a design interview, and a final hiring manager interview. After all that, they told me the position had already been filled, but that they were still interviewing me to see if I could be at a higher level than I had experience for (not setting me up for success). Then told me I could potentially be hired at a later date if budgets allow (making me wait on this "maybe" scenario). And, during my wrap up recruiter call, they confirmed the salary range with me, and their base was now all of a sudden MUCH LOWER than they initially told me weeks ago. I was very upset as this wasted my time, I didn't get an offer (even though they said they were impressed with me, but can't hire yet), and they never responded to any of my follow up emails. I asked if I could get a date range of maybe when they'd be hiring again (silence). Asked if I could get my final questions answered (silence). Gave constructive and positive feedback for their interview process (silence). I felt like they handled it very unprofessionally which is disappointing since their engineers seemed like great people and their company has a great product.

Pairing interview working through a Rails web application, panel interview covering various technical aspects. Recruiting team was very accommodating with my schedule and helped to expedite the process as I had a pending offer from another company. They were good about sending materials beforehand to prepare you on what to expect for the interview. I got vague feedback about why they were not moving forward, but not a huge deal.
