The process started with a recruiter contacting me via LinkedIn. Then after the first few positive responses, I was handed off to another recruiter. Ok, no big deal.
Interviews as listed:
- Recruiter screen (30 mins)
- Hiring Manager screen (45 mins)
- Portfolio review (1 hour)
- Panel Interview
- Preparation call with (new) Recruiter (20 mins)
-- Additional Portfolio (1 hour)
-- Product manager interview (1 hour)
-- Technical interview (1 hour)
-- "Culture" interview (1 hour)
While the first 2 interviews were mostly positive, things took a very negative turn for the panel interviews. First of all, the recruiter told me specifically that in my followup interview with the Design team, I would NOT need to present more portfolio work. Diving deeper into my portfolio was the first thing I was asked to do in that interview session, and I was caught completely off guard. Had I known I would have a deep dive, I would have come more prepared with more specific examples and stories.
Secondly, I was told by the recruiter what the primary question of the "Culture" interview would be, so I came with examples. The question that was asked was very different, and again threw me off. It also felt very much designed to make the interviewer fail or trip them up, which is not a positive experience at all. It left me feeling like the company culture is very untrusting and judgmental.
After the panel interviews, I heard nothing from the recruiter for almost 2 weeks, so I sent them a follow up. The recruiter's response was "I called you and sent you an email." I triple checked and never received a call, voicemail, or email response from them.
Lastly, they gave me feedback on why I wasn't chosen, and the reason was never once asked to me as a specific question. If you're looking for examples of XYZ, and those are dealbreakers for the role, then you need to ask specific questions about XYZ in the interviews. I have plenty of examples I could have shared if I was asked, and I don't understand why it took 8 interviews to come to the conclusion that they could have come to if they'd have asked the right questions in the 2nd or 3rd interviews.
Overall, the experience made me realize that this is not the right company for me. I feel like their assessment of me as a candidate from their feedback was very inaccurate, and their interview process is a red flag. I wish them the best and hope they improve this process and culture of hiring.
