I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Hertz in Oct 2013
Interview
Met Area Manager at campus career fair. Received a call from Area Manager to schedule an interview after emailing him two times. Showed up and was ushered into a glorified storage closet where the office just got out of a conference meeting.
They surprised me with a panel interview (came to find out they did this to save interview time by only conducting one interview for candidates) with two Branch Managers and Area Manager. Branch Manager conducted the interview in a manner that was very unpleasant. Immediately got the impression like I was not worth their time.
The panel did not know prior to the interview if I was looking as an immediate hire or upon graduation hire, or a location preference even though I was asked this by the Area Manager at initial contact!
Branch Manager conducting the interview did not ask any standard qualifying questions regarding the industry, what my expectations were, what makes me a good fit, or common personality interests. He immediately jumped into questions straight from the scorecard.
Questions were extremely broad, and when asked for further details they only referred me to a specific portion of my resume. I got the feeling like I was being rushed through (saw him skip a few questions on the scorecard) because it only lasted 20 minutes. A standard interview for me last at least one full hour.
They mentioned they were impressed with my resume but most of my experiences did not seem to correlate from their expressions.
At my turn to ask questions I asked for specifics regarding the trainee program. Their response did not include any time frames, target objectives, evaluation criteria, or duties of the position (their website offers extremely broad information regarding the position too). At this point, I knew both sides of the table were not going to be a good fit for each other.
My final question was what other steps could I take to move forward. Their response was, "Are you asking if you are hired?", and I restated my question for them to provide feedback on my performance. All they could say was "Just be yourself". They closed with saying we will let you know in a day or two on a decision in a day or two.
Without a doubt, the most unprofessional interview I have ever had. I encourage the company to implement hiring techniques more on par with other industry standards for recruiting.
