I'll Do IT Again - Mid Market AE Interview

      Jun 1, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Cambridge, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at HubSpot (Cambridge, MA) in May 2017

      Interview

      1. Email from HubSpot recruiter to schedule phone call 2. Average phone screen 3. Emails to schedule 2nd step of process, speak with manager 4. Average phone interview 5. Emails to schedule 3rd step of process, role play with another manager 6. Fairly straightforward but awkward role play, 30 minutes with 15 minutes to use feedback and try again 7. Emails to schedule on-site interview 8. On-site for two 1 hour panel interview(s) managers from step 2 & 3 as-well as director(s) 9. Emailed me an HubSpot Experience Survey 10. Phone call to share they did not move forward with me and provided some feedback as-well as receptive to dialogue/ discussion about what could/ should or was needed for next time Cliff notes: I was interviewed in a silo, the goal is for one person not to influence another persons decision (no note sharing). So unless the process changes, be sure to repeat your value add, desire etc in every session you have. Caution: My cover letter was admittedly not read by 3:4 people, and 2:4 saw my resume for the first time with me sitting in front of them. Be prepared to brief everyone you speak with on your resume, cover letter and any other relevant items you may have discussed in a previous interview/ session. Frustration: 3rd step of interview process was a phone based role play. In my case the manager wanted me to move forward in the process, but shift from speaking with Mid Market team to SMB group. Recruiter contacted me to schedule on-site, told me I was still being considered for Mid-Market. During my time at the office a manager & director (separate interview sessions) both said I should be speaking with the SMB team, not Mid Market. Upon further review of careers page, there are no job listing/ open requisites on the HubSpot website for SMB Account Executives in North America. However when I pressed for more info from the recruiter when I was called, they shared with me that all openings on SMB team are going to be filled by promoted BDR's. This can only lead me to believe that unfortunately like many other larger organizations, HubSpot is silo'd. Which is counter-intuitive given the innovative mantra, culture code etc. which they represent and advocate for. That said, I'll do it all over again. Unfortunately this time around, I advanced through the process but didn't have the experience/ track record they wanted. Miscommunication/ misunderstanding maybe.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What books am I reading, What's my sales process, Give me an example of how you handled an objection, Give me an example of how you qualified someone out, Given me an example of how you qualified someone in & walk me through that process, Why HubSpot, Walk us through your career job/ role progression... The interviewer(s) have a HubSpot provided applicant 'Score Card,' sheet of questions they can/ are asked to use during interview.
