I applied online. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at IRS (Austin, TX) in Aug 2011
Interview
You apply online through USAJOBS.GOV. This process takes a while. I think it was about 3 months when I got an email to show up at a "cattle call" In this process there were about 300 people, a bunch of standing in line for finger printing (for background checks) also quick 2 minute 1:1 interviews, then you go home. Then about 3 months after that, they call and offer you a position the starts in 8 days.

Question 1
They probably asked if there was a time in previous work where I handled sensitive data and to explain.
I applied in-person. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at IRS (Overland Park, KS) in Apr 2023
Interview
I went to the IRS in-person hiring event. It was a really simple process of registering and fingerprinting. No actual interview questions were asked. The whole process took about three hours.
Direct hire. Needed basic info and was hired on the spot. It was quite a simple process, just long. Come with everything they request or you may be turned away.
No interview was required for this position, just applied and was offered the position. Began as a clerk and did that for two years to get my foot in the door.
