      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at IXL Learning (San Mateo, CA) in Jun 2016

      Interview

The interview process was very professional, and I appreciated that it only lasted a little more than a week from when I submitted my application. I could tell my recruiter cared about the process and really worked to expedite the process and made sure that I was updated along the whole process.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at IXL Learning (San Mateo, CA) in Aug 2013

      Interview

I was contacted about a week after submitting the application online and communication was regular and prompt from then on. An initial phone interview was the first step. It was clear that the interviewer was gauging both my professional skills as well as culture fit during our talk. We had a pretty good rapport so the phone screen lasted a little over an hour. No unexpected questions asked - my professional background, why recruiting, why this company, etc. It went really well and I was asked to come onsite for an in-person interview. I was also given a job test to complete during this time. I was to respond to hypothetical inquiries, etc. and had a week to complete. The questions were straightforward and nothing out of the ordinary. They provided a good opportunity to research the company and product more in depth. For the onsite interview I met with 3 individuals who manage the various recruiting processes and then an executive. In total I was onsite for about 3 hours. The conversations went really well, no awkwardness or scripted lines. Standard questions about my background, professional experience and interests were asked. I came away from the onsite with a very positive feeling about the people on the recruiting team and the company as a whole. It was roughly two weeks from my onsite to the job offer but I had weekly contact with the recruiter so I didn't feel forgotten. As far as company atmosphere, I've seen some reviews talking about a sterile and quiet environment. The IXL offices are definitely more corporate feeling than what you'll find at a typical start-up in the Silicon Valley but I don't count this as a bad thing. Professional doesn't equate to not fun. Employees have individual work spaces in cubicles but when I was there I saw plenty of socializing between employees. There were also touches of fun thrown here and there; as evidenced by the inflatable pink unicorns and giant star wars angry bird stuffed animal gracing the office. At the end of my onsite interview, I was shown the plans for the expansion on the new floor. It was explained that the company is expanding to a second floor in the building and a whole redesign was planned, including (non-conference room) break out spaces, a new lunch/kitchen area, a living wall, and bright new colors for the walls. Clearly the company is growing and looking to provide a good environment for its employees. I also caught a glimpse of the IXL Softball/Baseball team photo on the way out, so I can only assume people working there have fun. Overall a very positive experience.

      Question 1

The questions asked were not out of the ordinary, but be prepared to provide tangible examples (show rather than tell), and have questions ready to ask. Be thoughtful and relevant with your questions.
