      Associate Product Manager (APM) Interview

      Apr 30, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

      I interviewed at IXL Learning

      Interview

IXL takes an unethical approach of interviewing candidates by assigning a take-home design challenge that takes unlimited time (HR literally said no time cap) in a week. Then it will tell you they can't move you forward without being able to provide any feedback. IXL recruiting doesn't deserve respect from its candidates

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I am attaching the questions in the Product Design Challenge, so feel free to get started early if you want. 1) Describe IXL to a teacher in 2-3 sentences. 2) Think about major challenges faced by different types of IXL users (students, teachers, parents). Describe 3-5 changes or enhancements that IXL could pursue to better meet their needs. What are some possible trade-offs/risks these changes might pose to the product or the user experience? 3) You are trying to build a better “Homework Assignments” feature for teachers on IXL. Currently, teachers can only assign IXL skills, and they may do so by telling students the skill code (e.g., B.4), sharing the URL, or by “starring” the skill in IXL. We have since added more features to IXL, including video tutorials and lessons. You want to enable teachers to assign any combination of IXL skills, lessons, and/or video tutorials for homework. a) To get started, describe the goals for this project. Think about how teachers assign and grade homework, and how students learn about, work on, and submit their homework. What are the most important things this feature needs to do for teachers? And for students? We recommend structuring your answer as bullet points or short paragraphs. b. One key decision you’ll need to make is how students and teachers will access this feature. Where on the IXL website will this feature live? Why? c. When teachers are creating homework, they enter information about the assignment. What information would IXL need to collect and store about each assignment? Feel free to use lists, diagrams, or sketches. d. Teachers will need to choose which IXL skills, videos, and/or lessons will be included in each assignment. What does this interface look like? How does a teacher get to and select items to assign? Sketches, wireframes, or mockups are highly encouraged!

      Application

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at IXL Learning (San Mateo, CA) in Jan 2026

      Interview

HR resume screening then a couple interviews with current APM, the VP of Product, and final panel with the team. I think interviewer is super nice but I don't like the whole concept of putting you on the spot to think about an obscure logic puzzle. I expressed my structured thinking and thought clearly but could not come up with the right answer which I think what ultimately caused the rejection.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Why this role? UI/UX Website critique and walkthrough. Logic puzzle questions.
