I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Illumina (San Diego, CA) in Jan 2019
Interview
Applied online in October 2018. Received a video interview November, a phone interview in December, and attended an in-person applicant screening event in January.
Video interview was completed through Hirevue and was mostly behavioral, with 1 or 2 semi-technical questions about biology.
30-minute phone interview was with the hiring manager about technical experience relevant to the position. Pretty casual.
5 hour in-person event for the top two candidates. Involved a networking session, company tour, and four activities, including two group activities, a presentation, and a 30-minute interview with the hiring manager. Overall, a well-run experience and they definitely sell you on how great the company is. I did meet the other applicant who had applied to the same position, which was tough. After the hiring manager said that they hired both of the candidates from this event last year, was definitely heartbroken receiving the rejection letter a week later. Would've preferred not to be given false hope.
Virtual interview, I didn't get to talk to a real person, had to record all of my answers with a time limit, it was a horrible process and there was very little human communication
The first step was an audio-only hirevue that allowed two attempts. After passing that, there were two video call interviews with team members for a total of around 90 minutes give or take.

Interview
Weird video interview where they asked me "How would you explain to a 6-year-old why the sky is orange at sunset." The other question I don't remember but was equally strange for a 2-question video interview. It felt very impersonal.
