      Seasonal Sales Associate Interview

      Jan 14, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at JCPenney in Oct 2013

      Interview

They called wanting to do a phone interview about a day after I submitted my application online. He asked a handful of softball questions before I was asked to schedule an in-person interview. There were two parts to the in-person interview. The first part was a group interview (~10 people) where we went around in a circle and talked about ourselves a bit. After that, we were each given a unique hand-out with two potential "plans" for expanding the company. Our task was to choose one of the two plans and give a brief presentation (~2 minutes) on why we each chose our plan and why it would be good for business. Once everyone finished their presentations, we had to work as a group, discussing the pros and cons of each plan until we could unanimously agree on one. (Hint: they are looking to see how well you work in a group and to see that you can come to a resolution that everyone is happy with by the end of the time frame.) After the first part, which lasted maybe 1.5-2 hours we were given a 15 minute break. The second part of the interview was the 1-on-1 interview. Once again the questions were pretty much all softballs: "Tell me a little more about your work experience." "What did you like about this job?" "What didn't you like about that job?" blah blah blah. At my store, the real interview portion is the group part and by the 1-on-1, they have pretty much made up their minds about you and it just a little bit of getting-to-know-you chatting time before the offer. Honestly, if you can make it to the interview portion (during the holidays, I don't know how this applies during the regular year) it should be a very easy interview. They are looking for warm bodies to fill spots during the holidays so their standards are not particularly high. The more difficult part is demonstrating that you are an asset they need to hire on permanently once the season is over. In the group interview try to be outgoing but not overpowering, friendly, assertive, and receptive and you should be fine.

      Application

I interviewed at JCPenney (Grand Rapids, MI)

      Interview

It was overall an easy interview. In a group setting of interviewees, we were asked to each talk about what we thought good customer service was. Then, we had some blocks to build a structure, a house I remember. Without the person you were instructing being able to see the blueprint, you had to describe what to do with the blocks without touching the blocks. I didn't know how I did, but I got hired. This was the holidays of 2017. :)
