      Quantitative Trader Interview

      Aug 8, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Jane Street (New York, NY) in Jan 2016

      Interview

30 minute interview on-campus to begin. Then four phone interviews that each lasted about an hour. Interviewed on-site for 4-5 hours. First three rounds had zero fit questions, only probability/game theory problems. Final round of on-site involved being given 100 chips and then making markets on answers to problems that were not difficult but very hard to get an exact answer to in the time they give you (1-2 minutes per problem). The interviews were actually pretty enjoyable because the problems were good but I rate my overall experience as negative because I had to go through many rounds of interviews to get to the onsite, which took an entire day of interview and transport, only to be rejected at the final stage.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Devise a strategy of betting on a seven-game series such that if team 1 wins the series you win $1000 no matter what and if team 1 loses, you lose $1000.

      Interview

Several phone calls to go to the final round. The phone calls consists of mathematical, probabilistic brain teasers which was not that hard for a mathematics major. Final round was to harsh for me, strong mentality is required

      Interview

Lots of expectation/probability questions. Make sure to study game-theory type question that involves expectations. Specific concepts in stochastic processes don't seem that important. The first two were relatively easy. Just make sure to ask a question if there is any uncertainty

      Interview

very fun a lot of interesting problems. The person which was managing the interview process was easily aproachable and really nice to talk to. Also interviewers seemed really interested in the problems given and gave me a lot of chances to talk about them
