Ridiculous, overly long, stupidly excessive process. I had three telephone calls which lasted one hour each. One of these was a coding interview in which I was asked to script up a few things in a language of my choice.
Following this I was invited in for a face-to-face interview day. This day lasted nearly six hours. It comprised of a series of face-to-face and video interviews with staff in Amsterdam and New York.
The sheer amount of repetition was staggering. I was questioned in total for 9 hours (3 telephone + 6 in person). How many security questions, Linux, Programming questions can you feasibly ask and answer in that time?
Seriously, if you don't know if a candidate is right after 1-2 calls and a 1-2 hour meeting then maybe the issue is with the company themselves? I appreciate that Jane Street are a top firm and have high standards, but I do think it's excessive, unfair and an ineffective process.
Not only this, but I was unsuccessful on the face-to-face interview. I had no feedback other than "The coding interview wasn't up to scratch". I gave up 9 hours of my time, including passing a coding telephone interview for that?!
Be fair to your candidates. Don't interrogate them for hours on end, fail them and then give a one line reason why they weren't right.
