An internal recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn and after the initial phone screen I was given a choice between a take-home exercise & live coding challenge as next steps. I personally don’t like either of these practices as they perpetuate bias in different ways, but I chose take-home as I knew that’s where I would perform better. I completed & submitted the assignment and was contacted a few days later to set up the next interview. Imagine my surprise when I was told this next interview would include a *live coding challenge.* I responded saying there must be a miscommunication because I had already chosen to complete the take-home, at which point I was informed there had been “a slight change in process” that would now require me to not only go over the take-home but also “do a quick live coding exercise.” When I pushed back saying I wasn’t comfortable with the change in process, they canceled my interview. As someone who has recruited & hired my own team, I would be embarrassed to treat candidates this way.
