      Frontend Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Justworks (New York, NY) in Jul 2016

      Interview

The interview process was pretty straightforward. I had an initial call to discuss the role and gauge my interest, followed by a short tech phone screen (30 mins). That call consisted of writing a basic JS function in Coderpad.io and making a couple of revisions to it, followed by a Q&A session. After that, I was invited to an on-site at their office but since I was in a different state, we decided to do the interviews over Skype instead. There were three 45-min rounds, each with two interviewers. The first round consisted of writing a basic class in Coderpad and adding additional functionality to it based on a set of desired inputs/outputs. It was pretty straightforward and while I didn't get through all of the methods, I felt it still went well. For this and the previous technical interview, I would suggest talking before writing your code and during the actual coding process ("ok so I'm going to use a basic iterator here to go over the array but we could alternatively use something like underscore.js, etc"). The following interview was an architecture question regarding how I'd setup the database for a fictional application. It was pretty straight forward and involved using Google Draw (didn't know that existed prior to this) to sketch out a schema and list out tables. The last interview was on culture/fit and involved chatting about JustWorks and the engineering team. After getting the green light on that, I was flown in to meet the team and do a last round of interviews with Isaac (CEO) and Nick (VP of Engineering). I had a great conversation with Isaac, who is smart, humble and very approachable, followed by a late lunch with the engineering team. The lunch was very laid back and we didn't really talk much about work, it was purely a fun/social hangout. A couple of days later I had a call with Nick that also went well, he is very smart but also has a great energy/vibe that seemed pretty contagious. I received an offer but ultimately decided to go with a different opportunity. JustWorks did everything right and they have a stellar team, I was actually disappointed in not being able to take them up on it. In the end, it came down to receiving a significantly higher offer for a more senior role at a different company. I will absolutely be recommending JustWorks to developer friends looking for jobs.
