      I interviewed at Kepler Group

      Interview

Very negative interview experience. After devoting many hours of time to attending quite a few interview rounds, they straight up ghosted me. I was told after the final round interview that the position was put "on hold" and I might not hear back for a couple weeks, and then of course they disappeared. I assume they had me in mind as a Plan B in case the other people they extended offers to ended up declining. They could have at least been straight with me about that. I think I was owed that courtesy or SOME kind of closure after investing so much time into the interview process. My first interview was in person with a recruiter. Very standard questions about my background and why I was interested in digital marketing/Kepler Group specifically. I then had a call with an entry level analyst that was pretty much the same. Next was a video call with two more senior managers and the leader of the specific department I applied to. It was LONG, I want to say they asked me to block out like 2.5-3 hours. There was a case which involved some marketing CPC data from a sample company. Using Excel, the managers asked me to identify the states where it was most expensive and least expensive for the company to advertise, and then hypothesize about why that was. The answer was essentially that the company is headquartered in the northeast, has greater existing brand awareness in the northeast, and therefore it was more expensive for them to advertise outside of the northeast. Really the only technical ability required here is knowledge about how to sort a data table on one individual column. The team leader also had a brief case. I was asked to name a brand I admire, list some qualities of their products that help them differentiate from competitors, summarize who I thought their target demographic would be, and come up with some ideas about how they could improve their current marketing strategy. I was also asked to give a 5-minute presentation about any topic of my choosing. It seems like you can pick pretty much anything you'd like to talk about. I picked a topic that was semi-related to marketing, added a little humor, and they seemed to like it. They'll probably ask a few questions about the presentation afterwards. Although it was short, this still took a decent amount of time for me to research/put together, and it is extra frustrating that they blew me off after I invested a lot of time essentially doing extra "homework" for them (in addition to having to miss several classes in order to be able to commit to such a long interview). I then had a final round interview with a director. He asked again a bit about why I was interested in Kepler Group, but also asked quite a few questions aimed at getting to know me personally. Overall, questions weren't overly difficult. They don't seem to care much if you don't have prior experience working in digital marketing, but you do need to demonstrate an ability to work with/interpret large sets of data and some general knowledge about trends in marketing.

We're sorry to hear your interview experience was negative. We truly value the time and energy that all candidates put into our interview process and work hard to ensure that is conveyed at each step. The nature of agency hiring is that our staffing needs are often dictated by client/account need, which can sometimes change abruptly. Ultimately, if the need changes, we can't make an offer, despite how many candidates we've interviewed. We often do put candidates on hold and reach back out when we confirm a new open position, though the timelines vary. It sounds like our team did follow up after your interview and share that update, communicating that we did not know when we'd be able to reopen the position, but that you'd prefer additional and more frequent updates beyond that. Given the high number of candidates we are interviewing at any one time, that is not always possible, but we are sorry that it negatively impacted your interview experience at Kepler.
