I interviewed for the Guest Teacher role in November 2018. Interview was conducted first via a brief phone screen and then a longer video chat that lasted about 25 minutes. Questions were pretty standard and the interviewer was very friendly. They offered me the job the same day I took the interview, but I ended up declining due to a multitude of red flags. First of all, they want you to pay for your own background check with a company rather than a police station-and it costs $39.75, which comes out of your own pocket, along with a "processing fee" of $1.28 to CSTN itself. Always be suspicious of an employer that wants you to pay them; I understand wanting to conduct a background check, but they should offer to reimburse you for the costs, not add to them. Additionally, the pay is very low and they refused to negotiate. You're offered ~$85 for one full day of substitute teaching and ~$45 for a half day. Between taxes, transportation costs, the upfront cost of the background check+fees, and food, it isn't nearly enough. They were also a little too pushy about completing the background check; considering I would have been out over $40 for that, they really had no right to be so impatient. All in all, I feel I dodged a bullet with this one and I urge all applicants to truly consider the expenses associated with this job before accepting.
