      Administrative Assistant Interview

      Apr 28, 2023

      Livermore, CA

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA) in Apr 2023

      Interview

First interview I had for LLNL was with a recruiter from their subcontracted staffing agency, North Wind. It was a VERY brief phone screen of ~10 mins for two positions--Administrative Coordinator (ES&H) and Recruiter. My resume was submitted apparently, but I never heard back from either recruiter despite my attempts to follow up. Out of frustration, I decided to apply to LLNL directly and persistently. Two weeks later, I landed an interview for the Administrative Assistant position in the LSEO division (NIF&PS). It was scheduled within a week of me providing my availability. The interview was just okay. It was a 45-min video interview via WebEx with two people. One of my interviewer is the division's administrator and she was late about 5 mins. The conversation style is very informal, which I think could've been great had there been a lot more enthusiasm or curiosity on both sides. I'm a naturally enthusiastic person and felt like I had to drop that from my personality in order to match the energies of the interviewers. Their responses said positive things but their body language and tone of voice communicated the opposite. There were plenty of awkward silences. No real inquiries asked about me aside from 1 question. When asked about the growth or development path of the division's employees, I was told "you can't leave us unless you get promoted". Eeek. Oh, also, come to find out this position became available because the last person in this role was promoted internally for the same role in ES&H (aka the same position the recruiter ghosted me about)!! Talk about a full circle moment....lol. Anyways, at least they let me know they weren't moving forward with my candidacy within 1 week of my thank you for the interview email. I would just reconsider the communication style of LLNL's entire hiring process. Seems like there's a lot of work that needs to be done, but the process of finding/retaining a quality candidate is not quite there yet.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1.) Tell us about yourself. 2.) Why this position, and why LLNL? 3.) How do you handle conflict?
