      Validation Engineer Interview

      May 8, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Newark, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Lucid Motors (Newark, CA) in Nov 2019

      Interview

First called by sr. recruiter after I applied online, and then 3 phone interviews, one every week, from 3 different team bosses (crash, safety, validation). Eventually, they decided to bring me onsite to be interviewed by the validation team. Phone interviews were highly technical with purely physics/mechanical-engineering fundamentals. Onsite: 5 interviews back to back in 4 hours (45-60 minutes each). Even though I studied mechanical engineering, surprisingly 60% of the interview revolved around the fundamentals of electric motors, batteries, and stuff. So, I was surprised and lost a bit of my confidence early in the day. But all of them were supporting/friendly. I could not do well but definitely had a nice experience at Lucid HQ. After 3 days, I got a call from a recruiter saying they are not selecting me due to my lack of experience. This make sense as Lucid is a startup and no one got any time to train there. If you can't hit the ground running from day one, you are not of much use to Lucid. As a fresh grad, I wasn't qualified enough. Surely, got good feedback about my interviews, learned more about the industry, and now I am buddy with the recruiter and few of the interviewer :))

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Different loses in electric motor and battery, Pre and post heat-treated stress-strain curve of a metal, fundamentals of the gearbox, fundamentals of basic metrology, natural frequency and how to avoid resonance in structure, fundamentals of heat transfer, and talking about past job experiences (which I didn't have)
