      Project Mechanical Engineer Interview

      Feb 3, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Lutron Electronics

      Interview

First had a phone interview. That started with a few behavorial questions. Then a problem solving scenario about determining the weight of a truck and if it could safely travel over a bridge. It was very basic estimation then they kept giving you things like a ruler and pressure gauge to help you. It was an interesting problem solving exercise that they helped you with. They then flew me out for an in person interview. This began with a sorry tour and demonstration of their products. Then the others and I were taken into individual rooms. There were three rounds of interviews. The first was behavorial questions, then one about technical questions, then a problem solving scenario again, similar to to truck, but it also involved a little bit of marketing. I then had lunch with one of their engineers in their cafeteria. This went alright, but was slightly awkward because I hadn't spoken with him until lunch, and they asked a lot of questions while I was trying to eat which was difficult. After lunch I was taken around and shown a couple of engineers desks. I was introduced to a few people. He made sure to introduce me to someone who graduated from my school. It was weird that when he introduced me he said that i had been bad mouthing my school, which I had not been. I love my school. This rubbed me the wrong way, and honestly upset me that he would lie about me to another employee directly in front of me. It was around 130pm when the tour finished and I was brought back to the little interview room. I thought I was done at this point because my iteniary said was supposed to be picked up and taken back to the airport at 2. I heard someone talk to the two other candidates (through the wall) and then escort them out while I waited in my room. After waiting for a while, thinking they forgot about me, I was told I was going to have another interview with two people at this point. It was another scenario type interview where I was an employee and had to solve a problem. The 2 guys pretended to be multiple people that I had to call and solve this problem. I would "call" one of them with a specific name and title to get a little bit of information, with someone else to contract or a little bit of information was given to me. This lasted about an hour and a half. It was a frustrating experience because they would lead me in a direction of a solution, and after a while they would tell me that solution is wrong and I had to start over at square one. This happened multiple times. By the end of it I had "called" around 25 different people with different titles and phone numbers that I had to keep track of on a blank piece of paper. The two guys interviewing me made if difficult because some of the people were not helpful and mean/ angry. There was also an senior engineer who was my resource, but he kept asking me what I thought could be the cause of the problem. I told him my possible solutions, which according to him were all possible. It was annoying that at least 3 times after that he did the same thing, and I have no knowledge in the area of the problem and he was supposed to be my resource, but some how expected me to magically come up with something. They eventually lead me in the correct direction so that I could contact the customer with the solution. I understand the point of this exercise, but they just took it too far and made it a miserable experience. Based on the type of people and how I was treated I decided on my walk out that even if I was offered a position there is no way I would accept an offer. Fortunately I was not offered a position, so I didn't have to tell them hell no.

      Interview

The first interview was a "technical interview" with no indication of this. I walked into the interview not knowing it would essentially be a quiz and little to no questioning about my actual resume. To be fair it was general engineering questions most mechanical engineers will learn in college. They asked me to draw a few graphs, fill in some tables, and to take apart a "click pen" and to describe what each piece was made of and the manufacturing process used for each part.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Lutron Electronics

      Interview

Not a good experience. I felt very disrespected in terms of both my time (they wanted me to interview for 7 hours straight) and the interviewers’ questions/responses during the interview process. The questions don’t make sense/are vague and when I tried asking for clarification they would only repeat themselves. When I was giving answers, they would respond with “are you sure?” And “are you really happy with that answer?” And did not go on to correct me or give feedback. Very low energy from all of the engineers I interviewed with (who were all very white and very male I might add). Did a super weird role play exercise which was unnecessarily intense and quite frankly, a waste of my time. I have interviewed with and received offers from top engineering companies, 2 of which had an intense technical portion with a follow up panel presentation (and I did not ever feel disrespected, treated unfairly, or like I was being strung along with no regard for my time like I did at Lutron). I don’t know if this company is struggling to hire, but they must be with how bad this experience was. By the time I went on to second round of interviews I was already over it and knew this company was not for me. I went forward with it because the interviews were prescheduled and I did not want to appear flaky, but in hindsight, I should have cancelled it before enduring 2 more hours of feeling talked down to and not listened to. I think they forget that an interview goes both ways. Would not recommend.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

What material is this product made of that I am showing to you over video call?
      Answer question

      Question 2

Role play: pretend you are an employee on your first day of work at Lutron. Deal with (insert problem that no first day employee would ever be required to solve) and find a solution in an hour. They also gave me random fake phone numbers and characters I had to “interact” with. No breaking character. The whole thing was extremely weird.
