I was contacted by a Maersk recruiter via Indeed about an Account Manager role. I applied, followed up professionally, and then the process stalled because the recruiter “couldn’t find me on LinkedIn.”
Let me be clear: LinkedIn is not a job requirement, a qualification, or a legal form of verification.
I had already submitted a full application and resume through the company’s own system.
If Maersk’s hiring process depends on whether a candidate maintains a third-party social media profile, that’s not recruiting — that’s lazy gatekeeping and over-reliance on automation.
For a company that claims to value people, integrity, and inclusivity, this experience felt impersonal, outdated, and frankly ridiculous. Being reached out to and then quietly deprioritized over LinkedIn optics is a waste of candidates’ time and reflects poorly on internal hiring standards.
Do better.
