Institute Associate Research Scientist IV Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) in Jul 2016

      Interview

Applied online via the MDACC website. 2-3 weeks later I was contacted directly via email by one of the hiring managers (Scientists) of the group. This initial interview was very pleasant and it was evident the manager had a strong interest in me as a candidate. She mentioned she wanted me to speak with her colleague next. About two weeks later, I had a second phone interview with the other manager of the group. Again, another pleasant interview that included a mix of technical and behavioral questions, but nothing out of the ordinary. A week following this interview I was contacted by HR regarding scheduling an onsite all day interview, which included a 30min presentation on my previous research. I was an out of state applicant and MDACC took care of all my travel and accommodations for the interview. The onsite interview took place 3 weeks later and was a full day of one on one interviews and a group lunch with other Associate Scientists. I had a great impression of the group and overall people were genuinely nice and seemed to love their jobs and MDACC. Very positive experience despite it being a long tiring day! The day ended with a one on one with the HR rep, we discussed basic things, current salary, relocation, benefits, how I felt about the position, etc. I expressed to her my strong interest in the position but also that I was fielding other offers so time was of the essence. The next day following the interview, one of the hiring managers contacted me for references. A little over a week following the interview, I received an informal job offer via phone call from HR and was offered the exact same salary I was currently making as well as a lower level Associate Scientist title due to my background. Even factoring in negotiation room and the low cost of living in Houston, I was quite taken aback and decided to decline since it wasn't even close to being on par (25K less) with the other offers I had to decide between.
