      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Los Angeles, CA) in Oct 2013

      Interview

I received a phone call from McMaster about their management program. I had been a long time user of the company and was very curious about the position, so I decided to proceed with a phone interview. The phone interview was a lot about my management and leadership experience and the choices I made. "Why did you go to your grad school?" "What type of leader are you?" Remember to know your resume inside and out along with WHY you chose certain decisions and what type of leader you are. I was called back later that week for an on-site interview. This is where the fun started. The day began with a 1.5 hour tour sitting with sales reps (on the phone), with the marketing team, and into the logistics warehouse. From there I went to a 1:1 for an hour, followed by a 1.5 hour lunch interview, then ending the day with two 1 hour interviews. I strongly recommend reviewing your personal stories that describe your personality and leadership style. You should also review McMaster's website (it rocks) and understand what can improve. Be yourself, get ready for a challenging interview and enjoy the day! Get good sleep and wear your best to impress. They called me back 1 week later with an offer.

"What would you improve about our website?" "How would you manage a team with no metrics at hand?"

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Los Angeles, CA)

      Interview

I was reached out to by their HR, who saw my LinkedIn. She requested a phone call to talk about the opportunity and the recruitment process. At the end of the call, she asked if I wanted to go straight into the first phone interview with her. I wasn't expecting that, but figured I'd go ahead and get it over with. A lot of the questions were around why I made different decisions since high school (from how did you choose your university, how did you choose your major, the groups you were in, the job you took after college). They also asked which office I would want to interview with, as well as the reason for the location (I requested LA). After that round, I got invited for the person interview. This lasted a full day. Started with a tour of the facility, sitting in on a customer service call, and talking with one of the guys that handles logistics. All of this, I learned later, wasn't actually part of the interview process; those people had no involvement in the hiring decision, and couldn't give their input either. However, you want to be attentive during this whole session, since the interviewers will ask you questions about your thoughts about the departments you saw. After the tours, it was 4 back-to-back interviews, including one over lunch. Mostly fit questions. One or two case studies based on projects they were currently working on.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Since the company prior to this interview was due to downsizing, one case an interviewer asked me was to analyze the best strategy for a firm to balance number of employees with rise/fall of clients. Felt awkward to be indirectly asked 'what did your company do wrong', given I have no negative feelings toward that company.
