      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Aurora, OH) in Oct 2014

      Interview

I applied by submitting a resume through my university's career center. The very next day I got an email from McMaster-Carr human resources asking to set up a phone interview at my convenience next week. That interview consisted of "Why did you choose your university?" and "What do you see yourself doing when you graduate?" Then I asked some questions about McMaster, including what the interview timeline looked like. She said the next step was a phone screening with her-- did I want to do that right now? It would take 15 minutes. And she asked me basically to talk about every internship and campus involvement thing I listed on my resume. After our discussion, she told me she wanted to extend an interview to me at the Cleveland branch, where I specified I preferred. She asked me dates that work best and told me HR there would be in touch soon. I got an email the same day from Cleveland confirming one of the dates I provided. At the interview, first I had an hour tour of the office and warehouse where my guide explained the departments and warehouse flows and asked me little questions like "how do you think we sort the items on the shelves?" Then that guy's supervisor interviewed me for an hour. He did not seem pleased to have to talk to me and didn't make me too excited to be interviewing for the position. He asked difficult questions about what I would do if a customer wanted 50 of something and we only had 10. And would qualify the situation every time I gave an answer. Then I had lunch with two managers who had been there about 3 years. They were also not extremely please to be spending time with me. Then I had another hour interview with another senior manager. Her questions were much more centered around seeing if I would be a right fit with the company vs. what I would do in certain situations and talking about my leadership past. The whole thing was 4.5 hours. They will be paying for my travel expenses. It was all just a little weird because I was there on casual Friday, but no one made that clear until the very end, so my first impression was that it was super casual and they weren't very serious about what they did. Talk about a time when you tried to pitch an idea to a team or boss and failed This was the only one I couldn't answer well-- I talked about an essay that I had to rewrite because my professor hated the entire argument

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL) in Dec 2024

      Interview

      1) 30-minute phone call with recruiter, they review your resume and confirm your location preferences. 2) Super Day, you get flown into the warehouse, get a tour of the facility, go throw a project share, and have 2-3 behavioral interviews. They ask for detail about experiences covered in your resume. They give about $600 stipend for traveling to/from the airport, eating, etc. They also book your travel for you.

      Interview

Phone call with recruiter for 30 minutes followed by an actual interview (1 hour) the week after. Interview felt stilted and the follow up process about everything was not great.
