      Business Development Executive Interview

      Oct 3, 2019
      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at NTT DATA (London, England)

      Interview

They said it would be a 3 stage interview process, I was doing the same job elsewhere and my performance was off the chart. I met the hiring manager who was arrogant and unimpressive. He looked at the stats I produced on my performance in my role and his only concern was that I seemed "too good to be true". They invented a 4th interview stage which was someone in the team who had recently moved out of the role they were hiring for was to interview me by phone... Half way through the guy asked me 'so what do you like doing outside of work, do you like going to the pub and having a drink?' the way the question was asked made me instantly understand that is what they wanted to know and why they invented a 4th stage of the interview process. I know a weekly' happy hour 'was a big thing to them, so they wanted to see whether I would be up for that. Of course, I could have been a recovering alcoholic, or a Muslim, in fact I am a Muslim and found this very unprofessional and racist in an interview situation. Choose not to work for these clowns as I had other options and went and built a successful career for myself elsewhere.

      Question 1

"so what do you like to do in your spare time and for fun? Like going to the pub with your mates and having a drink?"

Thank you for your feedback. As we haven’t had a live vacancy in this area for some time it is a shame you didn’t highlight your concerns during the process. We pride ourselves on providing a positive candidate experience and I’m sorry to hear that your recruitment fell below our usual high standards. Our typical interview process does involve three stages, however, from time to time we do ask candidates to attend further meetings when it can be of mutual benefit. On this occasion you were asked to speak to a member of staff who had previously worked in the role and this may have given you some useful insight into the day to day expectations. We do provide all our Hiring Managers with comprehensive interview skills training that should avoid any incidents of this nature occurring. One of our four values is Enjoyment and we do encourage our employees to participate in the social side of work including our monthly Happy Hour events. When these are held at the pub there is no expectation or requirement to drink alcohol and alternative options are available. There are many reasons why people choose not to drink including being pregnant, driving home etc and therefore we do not believe that the question you were asked could be deemed as racist. We are a multi-cultural international company and we cater for everyone by offering a range of sports and social activities to enable employees to spend quality time together and this would have been the purpose of the question you were asked. We take on board your feedback and wish you continued success in your career.
