I had online coding round for Screening and then onsite interview. There were several others 10-15 who interviewed in Netapp office along with me .
I had two coding rounds
Round 1 - find local minima . I gave simple iterative soln . then she asked to optimize it using some approach similar to Binary search . For example in 11,40,13,60,9,8,7,6,5 find middle element if its not local minima , check the left element if its greater then move to right as it is small . Now in right subarray after 9 perform the same steps . After some minutes of convincing her that this wont work as the array has to be sorted i gave up and wrote the recursive code as she wanted . Then next question was to reverse a linked list . I took some time but was able to complete the reverse function .
Interview 2 : from 1 to n convert it into binary representation and count the total no of 1 . Ex if input is 5 then from 1 to 5 convert in binary and count all the 1s.
Solved it .
Ignoring the fact that 1 question from interviewer was itself wrong , the first one where she wanted optimization i was feeling good about the interview .
Same interviewers took interview of another guy and asked same local minima and linked list question . So the thing was that they had just few questions prepared for all .
Next strange thing was they took managerial round of all the candidates since the morning , i was among the last 3 candidates in the schedule . So we waited till beyond 6 for our managerial round as we were expecting to get that interview . They came after 6 and said there is negative feedback from the manager to which we asked but we didn’t even had the managerial round so the recruiter fumbled a bit and said manager took the feedback from the interviewers of tech round .
Other point - Everyone before us 3 got managerial round and except one in my knowledge , all were called for HR round the next day as they were selected . Other point to note was all the guys had mixed tech interview some even had bad rounds but they got selected and one among the last three was exceptionally good but strangely enough all the three candidates at last who didn’t have managerial round had negative feedback from manager . FYI we didn’t see the manager neither did he see us .
FYI the guy who had same panel as me was fresher , and he was about to leave as manager said that you dont have dev exp as he did internship in QA but just while leaving he was called and informed that he was selected . Lucky he was from the morning batch .
