I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Minneapolis, MN) in Nov 2011
Interview
I was connected through a speaker who came to a campus club recruiting event. From there I was contacted by their recruiter and set up a phone interview. The phone interview was very basic and no hard questions were asked. The next interview occurred at one of the offices where the head of the internship program for the branch asked basically the same questions as the first interview, then laid out what the third interview would entail. During the third interview you are to give a presentation about yourself and why you think you are a good candidate to work at Northwestern Mutual. You also have to come up with a list of 100 people that you know you could call.

Question 1
No tough questions honestly. Just behavioral questions.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.
I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Greenville, SC)
Interview
The process was smooth and straight forward. A lot of behavioral based questions, but relaxed and low stress. First phase is a phone screening followed by a teams or in person meeting.
