I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual in Apr 2013
Interview
The interview process at Northwestern is a little bit daunting - at the first meeting they will repeatedly tell you that their internship is very highly ranked and give you a basic overview of what you will do if hired. There is then a brief interview, just a few questions about your thoughts on the insurance industry.
The second meeting with Northwestern will be at the local office you would be assigned to work at if hired and with someone you would be working under. They will further look for your interests in insurance and look for your goals. At this point they will assign you with coming up with a contact list of 100 friends and family members who you would be able to call, network with, and sell insurance to, if hired. They will also give you some interview questions to ask a few contacts regarding financial planning and insurance. The important thing with this step is that the list of 100 contacts have to be people Northwestern finds desirable - what I was instructed was to come up with a contact sheet of 100 of my friends and family members in the area. My interviewer told me that they could be people my age; at the time I was 20. When I turned in my contact sheet for review I was told that that list of 100 people all had to be in their late 20's or early 30's and established in a professional career, specifically they requested accountants and attorneys. If you're between the ages of 18 and 22 like most college students you will probably find this task very difficult as I did. This seems to be the biggest catch in the whole process.
