Tips to the hiring manager, you're missing out on top tier talent by by being picky with targeting specific skillsets. As long as the candidate comes from a strong/capable track record and possesses the enthusiasm to learn, you're passing on successful, potential candidates. Another tip is to stop reciting questions from a script but rather just have a conversation with the candidate, it will flow better and you can identify a person's true passions, interest, and skillset than having robotic answers recited. Best of luck in your recruitment process. :)

Thank you for the feedback and the suggestions! We are very supportive of hiring talent with transferable skills and we actively train our hiring managers to seek these transferable skills out for the reasons you mentioned! However, there are some roles that do require certain ‘hard skills’ in order to be successful, like SQL experience in this example. At this time in our company’s growth, we do sometimes need people to join us with that skillset at some level, in order for that person to be successful in the role. As far as scripted questions, we do strive to be prepared for interviews for a couple of reasons. First, we want to ensure that our candidates are not asked the same question over and over again by different interviewers. Second, we want to get the most well-rounded view of candidates’ skills and experience as it relates to the role, so we prepare relevant questions ahead of time to ensure this happens. I hope that helps explain our process and philosophy more. Thank you again for the feedback, it’s very helpful for us. -Rachel Green Director, Recruiting and Onboarding
