      Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 23, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Paychex in Nov 2021

      Interview

The first step was a phone screen with a recruiter. They ask a little about your experience with Java and SQL (they appeared to not know the difference between SQL and PLSQL). Whether or not you’ve worked with packages and procedures, why you’re looking to leave your current company, etc. This took less than 10 minutes. I actually had interviews with 2 different teams in the company so I’ll describe them both. For the first team, the interview was mostly behavioral. They want to know how you fit into your current position and how you’ll fit into theirs. They also mention some languages/frameworks and ask you to rate your knowledge of them out of 10. Some questions about packages and procedures and what kinds of them there are. They had me look through a Java code snippet and asked me how I would improve it. I said that I would add documentation/comments, split up multiple method calls into multiple lines, etc. I got the sense that they wanted me to say something more but I couldn’t think of anything else. They mentioned the possibility of a second interview. I had to follow up with them a couple weeks later to find out I got rejected. Keep in mind that they don’t always update the online application status. For the second team, they wanted to know specifics about my current position. How code reviews are done, what happens if a code review is rejected, how code makes its way to production, what happens if there’s a bug in production, how you use the SDLC in your work, etc. They also ask some details about your resume. They ask about the different types of REST calls and what they’re used for. They asked my opinion on test-driven development and what I know about design patterns (which wasn’t much). Then there were some technical assessments. The first one was to look at a Java code snippet and point out what was wrong with it. They were mostly simple issues that would be caught by a compiler. Also remember that Java doesn’t support multiple inheritance. The second was to write a SQL statement after being given a few tables. If you can do “select columnName from tableName where columnName in (select etc.);” then you’re probably ok. They might ask about joins and about the distinct keyword. The third assessment was to look at some somewhat unorganized Java code and say what it would print out with different inputs. I think I got all the questions right but I wasn’t too quick about it. This team sent me a rejection within a week.

      Interview

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS COMPANY !!! What a terrible interview process, was reached out by HR person on Linkden to interview. I said sure why not. She set me up with an interview with the hiring manager, it was totally unprofessional. Mid way in the interview he said that he misread my resume and no longer wanted to continue the interview. Highly unethical and unprofessional interviewer. Honestly I have had better experiences when apply for waiter/sales jobs at random companies when I was a student.
