Filled out application and took a personality test online. I received a call about 2 weeks later, on a Saturday, asking me if I was still interested in the position and to come in for an interview at 10am on Wednesday.
I met with an assistant manager and she took me to the back room to do the interview. She was relatively friendly and asked questions like "Why Payless?", "What do you know about Payless". I didn't have retail experience so I told her that I planned to go into law and that this was a great opportunity for me to gain experience interacting with customers and co-workers. Before continuing with the rest of the interview she told me why she chose Payless and said it was because of the opportunities for growth within the company. And she explained that she knew people who had been working there since they were 17 and are now 50 and spent their whole lives with the company. Ooops.
She then went on to ask situational questions like "Describe the most successful team you've been on" and "Describe a time when someone caused you stress". Pretty simple questions. After that we went into the store and did a role play where I had to sell her shoes. I actually found that to be the easiest part of the interview. The whole thing took about 30 minutes. She told me I would hear back on Friday (today) whether I got the job or not. I don't expect a call back because of my lack of retail experience.
