Pinterest interview questions

Applied through a friend. The recruiters were wonderful in setting up interviews quickly. Their follow ups were also within a day or two. I had two telephonic interviews. First being a very non interactive one the second one was good. First interviewer seemed not interested at all and was mostly working on the project while I was breaking my head over the question. I explained the solution first and then started coding. Interviewer then pointed out that I did not understand the question after I spend 10 minutes solving the problem. I later came to know that the interviewer had expressed an opinion that I did not understand the question. What a bummer. As a person who had taken 1000s of interview I could say that the first one was more prejudiced or completely out of interest. Second interview was very interactive and was working along for most of the interview. I think the first interview completely tipped off the decision.

A lot of weight is placed on cultural fit, so be friendly and open. After preparing for more difficult interview questions, I got completely thrown off track when asked to implement a couple of very basic iOS tasks -- think table/collection views and autolayout. Also think no boilerplate code to even get the app on screen. For an experienced engineer, who may be used to adding features to an existing application or use Xcode boilerplate code (read: most people), this was annoying. Not a good measure of anything, in my opinion. Was disappointed, because I don't think the two questions I flubbed were a good representation of day-to-day skills. Doubly disappointed, because I was told there would be a paired-coding session involving debugging, etc., which sounded a lot more worthwhile. At end of day: prepared for a senior position, was thrown by junior/entry-level questions.
